WOMEN IN CORRECTIONS

On the grounds of the beautiful Abbey, the theme for the weekend was two-fold: “Back to College” provided a casual atmosphere and “Women in Corrections, Both sides of the Wall” was informative. We had an impressive panel of women who have worked in law enforcement and been in the trenches.

Saturday

Welcoming us was the Dean of PCC Fremont Campus, Jennifer Herman.  The morning business meeting included reports from Public Policy Day.

Our luncheon speaker was Dr. Caterina Spinaris, Executive Director of Desert Waters Correctional Outreach. After lunch we had a panel of expert women who have "been there and done that."

Association Director at Large
Thomasyne Hill Smith

Dr. Smith lead a session on "AAUW Restructuring and Bylaws Changes." This was an informative and interactive session to discuss any concerns, ask questions and provide feedback to Association.

Dr. Smith came to us with a wide range of AAUW experience. She is a past president for the state of Alabama. Dr. Smith also served AAUW as an Association Diversity Resource Member, Diversity Chair for the State of Alabama, VP of Programs for the State of Alabama and a member of the Association Program Development Committee.  Her AAUW dual membership is with the Montevallo and Birmingham Branches in Alabama.

Professionally Dr. Thomasyne Hill Smith is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist. Currently Dr. Smith works for Jefferson County Schools at E. B. Erwin High School and Elementary School as a school speech-language pathologist. Dr. Smith is a past Assistant Professor and Clinical Supervisor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Montevallo. She is the president and owner of Hill Communications Consultants, Inc.
