  EYH-2000

Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000
University of Colorado, Boulder
Integrated Teaching and Learning Lab
10:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Middle school girls, parents, teachers and counselors will learn about math, science and technology, and other non-traditional careers from professional women and female CU students in this four-hour program.

ITLL

An objective of EYH is to raise awareness of the importance of math and science in middle school and all the way through high school.

Girls participate in two interactive workshops led by women whose careers use math, science and technology, plus a career fair where many other women showcase their science, technology or other non-traditional careers. In a parallel program, adults attend three workshops on topics ranging from understanding adolescent girls to planning for college.

  • Student participants must be currently enrolled in the six, seventh or eighth grade.  (Of course, home schooled students are welcome too, in the 6th through 8th grade ages).

  • Students will be assigned to small groups and the groups will be chaperoned by university guides throughout the day.

  • Large groups (more than 8 students) must register by October 18, and individuals must register by October 25, 2000.

  • Registration is limited, so register early!

  • Some student scholarships are available.

  • We will place students in one workshop related to their stated career interest.  This is the Expanding your Horizons conference -- you may discover a new interest that you didn't know about before!

Math is Power: Demand It

Math is Power

In middle school?  In high school?  Keep your opportunities and life choices open.  Plan to take math and science all the way through to graduation.  Without a solid math background, you can't even compete for entry-level jobs in today's increasingly technology-based job market.  You are making choices now that will last your entire life.  Choose Science.  Choose Math.

The knowledge base of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus or the equivalent in integrated curricula are crucial gatekeepers for access to a broad range of careers, including engineering, the natural sciences, accounting, investment banking and many others. Students who opt out of academic mathematics as early as eighth grade, essentially forego any future opportunity to pursue a career in such fields.

Math Is Power is a national public service advertising campaign developed by National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering in collaboration with the Advertising Council to provide information to parents and students about the importance of advanced mathematics courses in high school.
