Expanding Your Horizons will be held Saturday, February 23, 2008, with check-in starting at 10:00 am.

Registration is now open!

"Expanding Your Horizons" (EYH) is a math, science & technology career conference for 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls, parents, teachers and counselors.

A Great Conference in 2007!

In February 2007, 220 girls from 44 middle schools in Colorado attended hands-on workshops where they used math and science. Whether they were taking apart computer hard drives, doing CSI work with fingerprinting, pretending to sew up cats after surgery, or performing cryogenic magic tricks, girls learned that work in fields involving math and science can be cool and interesting. Professional women from the region generously donated their time to provide exciting workshop experiences for the girls.

What did the girls say about the conference?

The conference is for adults, too!

While the girls were busy in their workshops, 80 parents attended adult workshops about girls and math, healthy strategies for adolescents, and surviving the teen years.

The adults loved it, too!

Produced each year by the AAUW Boulder Branch (American Association of University Women) and various departments and programs at the University of Colorado at Boulder, EYH will be held February 23, 2008 at the University of Colorado Boulder thanks to our sponsor Seagate Technology! Registration will be opening soon and THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS February 19th. Seating is limited!

The objective of EYH is to increase the awareness among girls and their parents of the importance of adequate preparation in math and science and to encourage girls to consider science and math based career options such as engineering, computer science, and biometrics. Through participation in hands-on workshops and a career fair, girls are introduced to the world of math, engineering, and science where high school math and science are required.

EYH also has sessions for parents and educators addressing gender equity, learning styles, hands-on teaching experiences, college admission and financing a college education, and other relevant topics.

In Colorado, EYH was previously funded by the Department of Education and took place widely across the state. Since funding was cut by the state, the number of EYHs conferences across the Colorado has fallen dramatically -- only a couple are active. The AAUW Boulder Branch picked up the Boulder conference and has worked with CU-Boulder to continue to produce this inspirational event. And this year, Seagate Technology--a national EYH sponsor with a product design center in Longmont, Colorado--is funding the Boulder EYH conference. Seagate, a global leader in the design and manufacture of digital storage solutions, is committed to supporting public education in the areas of math, science and technology. EYH conferences are coordinated nationally by the Math/Science Network in Oakland, California.
