Note: location change Saturday, March 11, 2006 - 11AM - Annual Meeting, Pot Luck Luncheon Please bring a salad for our annual meeting and potluck luncheon. The meeting starts at 11A and will be held at the YWCA at 2222 14th St. (just off Pine St., north of St. John's Episcopal Church downtown). Our speakers will be the Wests who will speak on "Understanding Iran". Also we will announce the candidates for next year's board and hold the election.

Saturday, April 15, 2006 - 10 A - General Meeting Our speakers will share an inspiring story of hope and optimism of how people can make a difference in the life's of others that teaches them to help themselves and others. It is a story that started by teaching 42 families in Addis Ababa Ethiopia how to help themselves in a substantive and sustainable way that blossomed into other projects to help those around them such as setting up loving homes for children who had lost their parents to AIDS and creating a learning and community center for children. Come hear this wonderful story.

The meeting will be held at Meadows Library, 4800 Baseline Rd. in Boulder. Please feel free to bring a guest.

Geranium Sale - Our geranium sale, which benefits the Legal Advocacy Fund, will be held in May gain this year, just in time for Mother's Day. We will be passing around order forms at the meetings, or you can order by calling Doris Hass at 303-443-7087. Orders must be placed by Saturday, May 7th, and picked up at Doris' home on Thursday, May 11th.

Saturday, May 20 - 3P - General Meeting We will be meeting at Leanin' Tree Museum & Sculpture Garden of Western Art for a tour led by AAUW Boulder Branch member Sara Sheldon, who is also the director.

NEW MEMBER BIOS

 

Alison Sharley - BA in Anthropology, CU Boulder. Alison spent a semester abroad in Madagascar and now works with the local Board for Hope in Madagascar. She and her husband, Jonathan, enjoy wine-tasting and honeymooned in the California Wine country. Alison works part-time as a nanny and has plans to attend law school soon. She is an avid reader, enjoys hiking, skiing and camping, and was born and raised in Boulder.


Monica Smetana/Hertrich - AA Business, Saltzburger Hotelfuschule, Austria; BS Psychology, Regis University. Monica owns the PRAHA Restaurant and Bar in Boulder and is also the Executive Chef. She is a member of the American Culinary Federation and the Colorado Chef Cuisine. She is also lay pastor at St. John's Episcopal Church. She enjoys jogging, extreme mountain biking, skiing, hiking and scuba diving.


Carol Wooley - BA, MA from CU Boulder. Carol taught in the BVSD for 30 years, retiring in June 2003. Since retiring, she has traveled a great deal (on the "travel kick" she says) and in between trips, enjoys doing nothing! Her two nieces are one of her joys in life.


Susan M. Jones - BS University of Wisconsin (Madison); MS, University of Wisconsin (Oshkosh); Administrative License, University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee). Susan taught 8th grade in middle school, taught autistic/severely disturbed children, and was a program supervisor for the emotionally disturbed. Her hobbies are walking, reading, drawing, painting, travel, film, playgoing, concerts, grandchildren, gardening and nature education. She plans to be an open space volunteer.


Janelle M. Flaig -MURP - BS History/Physical Science, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti. Janelle has been a Senior City Planner in Denver for 10 years. She is interested in landscaping, sketching, oil painting, music, Tai Chi, traveling and her nieces and nephews.

Now that we do not have a paper copy of the newsletter, please remember to consult your 2005-06 Directory for information about times/location/dates of general meetings and interest groups.

AOL users - make sure to check your spam catchers for Boulder Branch AAUW messages. Several members have found messages that were snagged by their spam catchers.


"Expanding Your Horizons" (EYH) was a rousing success again this year. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who made it possible.

FYI, the AAUW National website has many interesting updates about women's/educational issues on a national scope. Check out the website at www.aauw.org. Also, become a "Two Minute Activist" by joining the Action E-list which sends email alerts for legislation in which your participation could make a critical difference for women's social/educational goals.
