From Astrid Maute and Melissa Teel
Hello, AAUW Members:
November was an exciting month. It started with the election, and we hope
that you exercised your voting privileges. The Boulder Branch had an great
speaker in November; Melinda Foster, a life coach, talked about "How
does work fit into life?". The meeting was well attended and everybody
had fun doing a Myers-Briggs personality analysis. Hopefully everybody took
an idea or two home - great New Year's Resolutions!!!
We included several articles in this bulletin about the activities of the
National AAUW. They are quite busy with an update of the strategic process
for the future of AAUW, and have opened a Member Services Database. We also
included some information about the LAF's 2006 Progress in Equity Award.
Now that the holidays are fast approaching and will soon be over, AAUW Boulder
Branch will be presenting a wonderful series of panel discussions with various
authors in winter and spring. See the article in this issue of the EBulletin.
Also, Public Policy Day will be held on February 3, 2007 at the Holiday Inn
at 7390 W. Hampden Avenue in Lakewood. Check the attachments with this EBulletin
for further information. Also check the State Bulletin which should be arriving
shortly in members' mailboxes. It also includes a registration form for Public
Policy Day.
Enjoy the holidays and begin the New Year by participating in AAUW events
and interest groups this winter and spring!

The Expanding Your Horizons committee has been working hard to get things going for the scheduled event on Saturday Feb 24, 2007. “Expanding Your Horizons” (EYH) is a conference designed to encourage middle school girls to pursue careers in math and science.
Our first wave of publicity is now complete and we are pleased to let you know that the first registrations have already come in! There are already 7 girls and 3 adults registered!
How can I Help? – We are so glad you asked! We could really use help in simply getting the word out to the girls:

AAUW-From National:
AAUW Keys to the Future: A Member-Get-A-Member Campaign
We are starting to hear from different parts of the country-the AAUW Keys
to the Future: A Member-Get-A-Member Campaign is taking off! We've heard of
several branches who have recruited over 15 members each, and more than one
individual who has recruited six members each, receiving our special "Key
Award". Be sure to check the list of successful recruiters populating
the Keys to the Future Hall of Fame. Send an e-postcard asking a deserving
individual to join. The momentum has begun; we need all of our states and
branches to keep us growing!
Strategic Process 2006
AAUW Association and Educational Foundation boards of directors are building
on last month's historic Joint Boards Report, dated Oct. 31, 2006, on the
future of AAUW. This report will be posted on the website (see below link)
by Friday, Dec. 1. In the coming months, boards will be engaging task forces
and other working groups composed of members, staff, and experts to accomplish
two important goals:
1.To drill down deeper in defining the three strategic initiatives agreed to in the report-being driven by a single mission and vision, building a more diverse membership, and streamlining the organizational structure.
2.To share our work with members and engage them in achieving the potential this strategic realignment offers AAUW.
You can continue to keep updated on the strategic work for AAUW's future
on the website in the Members Center at:
http://www.aauw.org/member_center/leader_corner/strategic_pp2006.cfm.
Member Services
On Wednesday, November 29, the Member Services option will be available in
the Member Center of the AAUW web site. This new online database system will
provide: secure access control for members and member leaders; individual
profile maintenance; branch/state officer listings; branch member contact
maintenance; branch/state officer list maintenance/maintenance rights; Branch
Dues Report forms (BDRs); Additional Dues Report forms (ADRs);
individual contribution forms; and Contribution Report Forms (CRFs). Member
leaders received the summary memo describing the functions and operations
of this new online application via their respective listservs on Wednesday,
Nov. 22. If you would like to view the memo, click on http://svc.aauw.org/RECore/docu/MemberServicesDatabaseIntroMemo.pdf.
Dept. of Education's New Single-Sex Education Regulations
On Oct. 24, the Department of Education announced new regulations to ease
limits on single-sex education in public schools. The new regulations would
allow the exclusion of students from classes based on gender. Those
regulations, Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Sex in Education Programs or
Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance, have now been published
on the Dept. of Education website. To learn more about AAUW's response to
the controversial new regulations, read AAUW's press release and the press
coverage that AAUW has received on this issue.
LAF's 2006 Progress in Equity Award
The University of Michigan, Dearborn College Level Courses at Scott Correctional
Facility for Women will be officially awarded the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund
2006 Progress in Equity Award on Nov. 16. LAF is proud to recognize the important
work this innovative program does to advance women's educational opportunity
in a critically underserved
population. Honorable Mention was given to the Bridge of Hope program at the
University of Hawaii, Honolulu for its work to advance women's educational
opportunities. Read more about the PIE award and the winner of this year's
award on AAUW's website at www.aauw.org/laf/pie/index.cfm.
Public Policy
Marilyn Leist, Chair
I just received my Bulletin from AAUW Colorado and was reminded of Public
Policy Day. I'm going to attend and I have room for 4 more people in my car.
Please call 720-771-2292 if you'd like a ride. First come, first served. I
hope my phone will be ringing off the hook.
Why am I going? Well, I want to learn more about the major issues facing Colorado's
women. Experts will be discussing economic self-sufficiency, the provision
of access to quality and affordable health care, and how immigration policies
impact women.
There will also be a discussion on the issues coming up in the 2007 Legislative
Session. Listening to that will arm me with facts on which I can base my decisions
for action during the session. You, too, will be able to advocate your representatives
on issues that are important to you if you go along with me.
Sounds like an interesting day, an excellent way to spend time with amazing
AAUW women. Join me!
