From Astrid Maute and Melissa Teel
Hello, AAUW Members:
Hopefully, spring will be in the air soon! It’s hard to believe the
AAUW year of 2006-07 is coming to an end! We encourage all Boulder Branch
members to attend our Annual Meeting on March 10th and to attend the wonderful
author panel discussions at the general meetings in April and May. Astrid
and Melissa are stepping down as co-presidents in June; we have greatly enjoyed
our presidential duties!
“Expanding Your Horizons” (EYH) was a great success due to all the hard work of AAUW members, Seagate Technology and the Boulder Latina Women’s Council. We had over 200 girls and 80 parents attending. We also had a great write-up in the Camera the next day! Click here to read the article.
Have a fantastic spring and enjoy the beautiful Colorado weather!

AAUW-From National
PUBLIC POLICY – Marilyn Leist, Chair
Women’s Economic Self-Sufficiency
On February 3rd, Doris Hass, Lora Lehman, and Marilyn Leist attended a very enlightening AAUW Public Policy Day in Lakewood. The most engaging presentation concerned Economic Self-Sufficiency for women in Colorado. Gretchen Gagel McComb, president of the Women’s Foundation of Colorado talked about the fact that it takes $44,600. for a woman with two children to meet her basic financial needs with no public assistance. Did you know that 10% of women in Colorado live in poverty and 27% of Colorado household s are headed by women. The most startling revelation, however, was the “cliff effect,” the reductions in spendable income due to the abrupt loss of various benefits designed to support lower-income women. The “cliff effect” is caused by, even insignificant, increases in their earnings.
