BE INFORMED

Come to our special meeting Oct. 9th to learn about all the issues from the League of Women Voters. Guests are welcome.

Colorado AAUW has taken positions on the following ballot issues:

Amendment 46

Colorado AAUW opposes Amendment 46 (the so-called Colorado Civil Rights Initiative) because passage would eliminate those modest, voluntary programs that ensure equal opportunity regarding access to education, hiring, and contracting in the public sector – despite ballot wording that seemingly promises to level the playing field. In every state where similar “civil rights initiatives” have passed, gender and racial diversity has sharply decreased in the public sector. For one example among hundreds, programs have been eliminated that encourage women and girls to pursue careers in the skilled trades; in health care; and in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Keep in mind that Amendment 46 is a copycat ballot measure propelled by out-of-state interests seeking to change the Colorado constitution to outlaw equal opportunity programs. And leading proponent, Californian Ward Connerly, has been accused of profiteering (to the tune of approximately $7.6 million) from contributions to his two “civil rights” nonprofits. Colorado AAUW is a member of the Colorado Unity coalition in the “Vote No on Amendment 46” campaign. AAUW members may make contributions of money and/or time, and this effort definitely needs your help because the intent of 46 is so misunderstood by most Coloradans! Please see www.votenoamendment46.com for more information.

Amendment 48

Colorado AAUW also opposes Amendment 48 (the so-called Definition of Person amendment), a constitutional amendment that would grant legal rights to fertilized eggs. Amendment 48 would introduce the government, courts, and lawyers into our personal private lives and compromise the doctor-patient relationship, at the behest of extremists seeking to change the Colorado constitution. Further, Amendment 48 would create a legal nightmare because it would change literally thousands of laws, including those related to property and inheritance rights, thereby clogging our courts. Amendment 48 simply goes too far, banning abortion and emergency contraception, even in cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is at risk. Common forms of birth control, such as the Pill and IUDs, could be banned if Amendment 48 passes, as well as cancer treatments for pregnant women. Colorado AAUW is a member of the Protect Families Protect Choices coalition in the “No on 48” campaign. AAUW members may make contributions of money and/or time, and this effort needs your help! Please see www.protectfamiliesprotectchoices.org for more info.

Amendment 58

Colorado AAUW supports Amendment 58, a statue that will end property-tax deductions for the oil and gas industry that allow producers to take a credit of up to 87.5% of the prior year's property tax liability from their severance taxes. New revenues will be directed as follows: 60% to the Colorado Promise Scholarship Fund, 15% for local impact of the oil and gas industry on transportation and water quality, 15% for wildlife habitat, and 10% to clean energy projects. College scholarships for Colorado residents who are students at state two-year and four-year institutions would be based on a family's adjusted gross income and on the number of students a family has in college. Students would be required to maintain a 2.5 or better grade point average. For more info, please see www.ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Colorado_Initiative_113_%282008%29 and www.asmartercolorado.org.

Amendment 59

Colorado AAUW supports Amendment 59, a constitutional amendment that would create a state education fund savings account within the state education fund for public P-12 education by diverting any revenue the state would otherwise be required to rebated under the TABOR (Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights) rules to the state education fund instead. It would require that state educational spending increase by rate of inflation plus 1% through fiscal year 2010-2011 and restrict spending of the state education fund and state education fund savings account to specific education expenses. For more info, please see www.ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Colorado_Initiative_126_%282008%29 and www.coloradosafe.org.

Referendum O

Colorado AAUW supports Referendum O, a legislatively referred constitutional amendment that would increase the signature requirement for constitutional amendments by more than 15,000, drop the signature requirement for placing a new state law on the ballot, add a distribution requirement (requiring at least 8% of petition signatures to be gathered in each congressional district), and establish an earlier deadline for filing initiatives. Passage of Referendum O would make it more difficult for out-of-state agitators to attempt to change the Colorado constitution and would guarantee equal representation of Colorado citizens in the initiative prequalification process. Fundraising - "Dine Out for A Step Up" at 240 Union Oct 2, 2008, helped Stride

This year Lakewood AAUW is hosted a benefit with Stride to assist with the educational goals of women who are working hard toward self-sufficiency and a better life in Jefferson County. We thank the 240 Union Restaurant located at 240 Union Avenue in Lakewood for hosting our fundraiser and donating 25% of the food sales to "Dine Out for A Step Up"

Lakewood AAUW's local philanthropy is "A Step Up: Education is the Gateway to Women's Financial Security." AAUW realizes that education is a big part of the equation for success.

Stride's mission is to enable low-income individuals and families to become economically self-sufficient and independent of government programs. Since 1991, Stride has helped more than 500 families, and two-thirds of them are succeeding. For more information on Stride go to www.stride-co.org.

Community Involvement
In 2006 we launched a new project, A Step Up: Education is the Gateway to Women's Economic Security. We teamed with Stride and Family Tree, two social service organizations in our community, to help us identify women who needed financial assistance for their next educational steps. In 2007 we partnered with Stride.

We promote and support public education. We also participate in local events, such as Habitat for Humanity builds, Race for the Cure, Second Wind Walk/Run, Channel 6 Auction, Channel 9 Health Fair, and the Lakewood Music Scholar Program with Chester, England.

We achieve positive outcomes by combining our efforts with other community groups:

  • Lakewood Heritage Center
  • West Jeffco Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the annual Good News Breakfast
  • Jefferson Center for Mental Health
  • Jeffco Action Center
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • City of Lakewood

Activities
We nurture friendships and expand our knowledge through interest groups. Join one or enjoy them all:

  • Books and Lunch or Evening Literature
  • Gourmet Potpourri or Gourmet Lite
  • Bridge groups
  • Public Policy Discussions and Actions
  • Great Decisions, a discussion of International Relations
  • Outdoor Adventure

We also enjoy diversions -- one-time events that are entertaining, educational, and often "outside the box."
