The American Association of University Women promotes education and equity for all women and girls. During the 2005 Convention, the AAUW By-Laws were amended to reach a broader base of potential members. Currently the By-Laws now admit to membership a graduate holding an associate or equivalent degree or higher from a qualified educational institution.

An associate degree is a two-year prescribed course of study "awarded by community colleges, junior colleges and bachelor's degree-granting colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. It is the equivalent to the first two years in a four-year college or university.

The equivalent of an associate degree is an academic degree or diploma awarded by a qualified institution such as a business college or a hospital, which may not be called "associate degree" but has the same academic requirements or greater; for example, the RN diploma or associate degrees awarded by business colleges/schools qualify.

Becoming a member does not require an invitation and, yes, men can join too.

In principle and in practice, AAUW values and seeks diverse membership. There shall be no barrier to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin or disability.

Participate in many or a few AAUW activities ... or belong just to support our mission of equity and education, (but we hope everyone helps with our annual Book Fair).

               •Members of AAUW's 1500-plus branches become involved in community action projects, meet new friends, and develop their leadership skills.
2. Make a difference in your community and the nation
               • Members impact elections, mentor young women, sponsor community forums, lobby legislators, and influence school board policy.
3. Impact the classroom
              • Members use the AAUW Educational Foundation's groundbreaking research to advocate for K-12 classrooms that are safe and gender-fair by providing teachers and administrators with the information, materials, and support they need.
4. Plug into Capitol Hill
               • Members influence legislative debate on gender equity, civil rights, pay equity, education, health reform, vocational education, family and medical leave, and reproductive choice.
5. Build a firm foundation
               • Members support the AAUW Educational Foundation, which funds fellowships and grants for outstanding women from around the world, and the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, which provides funds and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education.
